Communities with Gates: Less Crime or Not?

Tuesday, February 2nd, 2010

A lot of people believe that living inside a gated community brings added benefits of protection and security. These communities are meant to keep crime out, but do gated communities actually have less crime like they want us to believe? Is it actually safer for them to live there?

Gated communities project security because they provide their own patrol guards, security codes and gates to keep those who do not have access outside. All of these things sound great, but is there actually that much of a difference in crime rate from gated communities and those outside. The answer is yes, but surprisingly gated communities only have a marginal lower crime rate.

Most data indicates that there is only a slight difference in the long term crime rate between gated communities and other neighborhoods. Most gated communities crime rate may be very low for the first year, but then it rises to just slight less than the rest of the outside communities. Many burglars are deterred from gated communities because there isn’t an easy exit point, but it seems that after only a few short years that does not seem to stop them from going inside.

Most critics of gated communities feel that residents living inside these establishments have a false sense of security. As pointed out before, the main appeal to many homeowners is that of safety. Critics feel that gated communities are not as safe as they advertise.

For example, gated communities have security guards that patrol the area. While this helps police officers from having to patrol the area, many feel the security guards don’t have the skills or means to safely protect the homeowners if a burglar or criminal were to get inside the gates. Most security guards are only getting paid $10 an hour and most likely don’t have the proper skills or desire to put themselves in harms way if a felony were to be committed.

There also is an issue of emergency vehicles gaining admittance inside gated communities. When emergency personnel are called for aid it is hard for them to gain entrance inside in a timely fashion, especially with the amount of unmanned gates that have codes. Gated communities also tend to have narrow gate entrances which makes it hard for ambulances and fire engines to fit inside. This causes problems for individuals who need emergency assistance.

Lastly, a lot of people feel secure in the fact that you have to have an access code to be given entrance inside. But many unmanned gates have codes that have been given out to countless individuals who not live inside the gates. There is really no way of guaranteeing that the pizza delivery boy hasn’t given the code out to anyone else.

Critics may feel that communities with gates aren’t as safe as they profess to be, but they do continue to be more and more popular. With each coming year they build new gated communities, even though they show to be just as effective as neighborhood watch programs. And neighborhood watch programs have the added perk that they are free.

Self Defense Devices For Women

Saturday, January 30th, 2010

It is important that you try to make sure that you are always safe from risk. Of course certain risks are completely unavoidable but there are some things that you can do in order to give yourself the best chance to be prepared for any risk of attack that might come your way. Crime is always going to be prevalent so its important to prepare yourself in-case someone comes after you to grasp your purse or to sexually attack you. Self defense is something that you should consider whenever you are out alone or in a vulnerable state.

Whilst men are at risk of attack, women are more so. An attack is most likely to occur at night when it is dark and so steps need to be taken to ensure that you have done all that you can to avoid anyplace where you might be attacked. Never go anywhere alone at night and always make sure that you stay in well-lit areas. Avoid things like side streets and any vegetated areas where you might be in great danger of attack. Also, if you are going on a night out then try to limit your drinking and not get too drunk.

There are a number of different ways in which you can defend yourself. One thing that you can do is to take self defense classes and to make sure that you know certain ways of protecting yourself against any would be attacker using only your arms and legs. You will be taught about techniques designed to focus on any attackers weak points such as their eyes and groin.

As well as any martial arts, you also need to make sure that you are always carrying with you some different defense devices that can be used on any attacker to incapacitate them. One great option is to use a stun gun, which will deliver a high voltage jolt to the attackers chest that will temporarily render them unable to move. This will give you plenty of time to get away and alert the proper authorities that will be able to arrest them.

Much like a stun gun, you can also consider using a taser. This can be used from up to 20 feet away and will cause temporary paralysis to the attacker, again enabling you to escape.

Another option would be to get yourself a mace or pepper spray. These devices have been used for years and are excellent ways of defending yourself from a close contact attack. There are many different types of spray that you can get to fit into your handbag. Due to the fact that any attacker will be wary of the fact that you may have a spray on you, they have also been designed to be hidden in things like pens or even rings that are right to hand in-case of attack. These sprays will force the attackers eyes to shut for half an hour is delivered to their face, which will give you plenty of time to escape.

Last of all, you might even consider carrying a knife as a self-defense product. You can get ones that are specifically designed as self-defense, although these sorts of options should be at the bottom of your shopping list due to the height of knife crime.

Whatever you choose to use, you should make sure that you are fully prepared from any possible attack by having at least on device on you at all times.

I found a self defense device that was just right for me at www.a1selfdefenseproducts.com. I’m sure they will have something to suit your needs too.

Residential Security Systems – Do You Even Need A Home Security System?

Friday, January 29th, 2010

Many homeowners wonder if they truly need a home security system to protect their house and their possessions. Sure, they seem to provide a great service but are they really worth the cost and do they really work? When it comes to your home and your family, you want to take every precaution that you can, you just nee to be sure that you’re not wasting your time, effort or money.

First of all, an effective home security system is going to provide many different features, much more than basic intrusion protection. Of course, this is important in and of itself, as you want to keep all unwanted parties out of your house at all times, whether you are home or the house is empty.

In many cases all you really need to increase your security is to display a sign of an alarm system on your property. Just this sign alone can prevent many potential break-ins from ever taking place. Of course, with a real home security system backing that up, if anything still does happen you’ll still be protected when it matters most. This is frequently discussed in any worthwhile report or information about home security tips.

Home security systems also protect your house against fires. The risk of a house fire is always there, and you never know when something can cause a chain reaction and your home could end up in flames. Having the fire crews sent automatically to your house after a short period of time will make the difference between your family escaping safely and your house remaining standing.

Additionally, if nobody is home, you still want to protect your house from fire. A fire alarm can prevent your home and all of your valuable possessions from being destroyed, even when you’re not around and in direct danger. It can also help save the life of a pet you have around the house.

More than all of these tangible benefits of a home security system, you’ll also be the lucky recipient of a positive everyday outlook. You’ll enjoy having a great peace of mind and a wonderful sense of security. This will not only make you a happier person, but it will also open up the door to taking longer trips and leaving the house more without feeling worried, nervous or guilty about it.

In addition to all of these benefits, you still get even more with the best home security systems. For example, with some systems you can get intricate motion detection systems for added security. Almost all systems today now come with carbon monoxide detection as well, which is important because the deadly gas is invisible and odorless.

Taking the protection of your family and your home is an important responsibility and you can’t overlook it. Don’t make the mistake and think that you can get by without a home security system. From fires to break-ins, carbon monoxide and much more, a home security is the best way to protect your family and your home at a reasonable cost.

Safety Tips For Your Yard

Thursday, January 28th, 2010

The best way to protect yourself from harm in your yard is to follow safety guidelines. No one intentionally sets out to harm themselves while they are outside, yet accidents still happen. Below are a few yard safety tips to remind you of.

Always follow directions. Directions are there to help you best know how to work the equipment or products carefully and safely. It is a good idea to keep the instruction manual handy in case you run into any hang ups or questions.

If you haven’t used the yard equipment before, take time to know how to use it safely. Ask the salesperson you bought it from any questions you may have on how to use the equipment. He or she may provide specific tips to safely use the piece of equipment.

If the job requires more than one person, ask for assistance. Ask for help so you don’t get harmed trying to accomplish your goal. If a project is too big for you, or may prove to be too dangerous, don’t try to do it on your own.

Take your time on outdoor projects. If you know you have a project that will take up a lot of time, don’t try to accomplish it when you are busy. Schedule enough time for you to work on your outdoor projects safely.

If you are working on a more dangerous job, be especially cautious. Gauge what the danger level will be before you start your job. For example, you would need to be more cautious with sawing a 2×4 than you would mowing your lawn.

More dangerous jobs will require a higher level of concentration. Don’t multitask during more difficult jobs. Save the cell phone call to your mom until after your job is done.

Your best defense against getting hurt while you are outside is to be cautious. Accidents will always happen, but you will be more successful in yard safety if you follow yard safety guidelines. It’s better to be safe with your chores rather than risking unnecessary injury.

Security Tips For Pool Safety

Wednesday, January 27th, 2010

The safety of your children needs to be a priority, especially with a swimming pool in your yard. A swimming pool can be a very dangerous place for younger children. Here are some pool safety tips you can use in regards to pool safety.

Have an adult there to supervise any children in the yard at all times. This is the biggest prevention you can take. Don’t leave children unchaperoned.

CPR is a wonderful asset to have regardless of your circumstances, but it is very effective if a child does swallow water or drown. If you own a pool, know or learn how to do CPR in case of any emergencies. There are courses you can take locally, or even videos you can watch online.

Most young children who drown in pools aren’t swimming, but accidentally fall in to the pool when they wander around the yard. Install a pool fence. This is meant to separate your pool from the rest of your yard and home.

The pool fence needs to be tall enough that younger children can’t climb over it or sneak through. A good height for a pool fence is 4 feet high, and should be placed along all the sides of the pool. The latch on the entrance gate should be placed high enough that younger children can’t reach it.

Don’t have your children use air-filled swimming cuffs or toys instead of using a life vest. Have your children use approved life vests for their safety. Toys and cuffs are not good substitutes for safety life vests.

Supervise children and make sure that they walk around the pool so they have less chance of falling. Running on wet surfaces can cause them to slip and hurt themselves. When children are swimming have them walk around the cement.

When the pool is not in use, continue to take safety measures. Be sure that the gate is closed properly and the latch is set or locked. You also can purchase a pool cover, though they should never be used in place of a pool gate.
